A NIST request for information, appearing in the Federal Register, aims to collect stakeholder input for guidance that will help technology developers, users and evaluators improve the trustworthiness of AI systems as well as create a framework. The request from NIST follows direction from Congress for the agency, which is part of the U.S. Commerce Department, as well as the executive order signed in February 2019 by former President Donald Trump. The congressional action and executive order direct NIST to create “a plan for federal engagement in the development of technical standards and related tools in support of … systems that use AI technologies.”
