Ah, Scotland. Home of the Loch Ness Monster, birthplace of William Wallace, originator of one of the world’s finest alcoholic beverages, and a 21st century renewable energy leader? Regardless of how you feel about Nessie, Scotland’s recent implementation of what is reportedly the world’s largest tidal turbine could bring a new legacy to this storied land of highlands and castles. Orbital Marine Power recently put the 242’, 680-ton O2 turbine into operation off the coast of Orkney in northeast Scotland. Linked to the land-based European Marine Energy Center via an underwater cable, it hopes to harness the power of ocean currents amongst the island chain in producing enough electricity for roughly 2,000 homes over the next 15 years.
